The Applied Biology Limited Licence allows competent practitioners to work independently in the specific area set out in their licence, despite not meeting RPBio or RBTech academic requirements. 

To qualify as an AB-LL, applicants must describe their proposed licence area, and meet the following criteria:

Education and Experience

  • Provide proof of education or training in the area of the limited licence being applied for.
  • Have 5 years of applied biology experience with 2 years in the area requested for the limited licence.

Professional Work Products

  • Submit 2-4 professional work products in the specific area of applied biology that the limited licence application is for
  • The professional work products must include the following components, between the work products:
    • methods 
    • data analysis within established standards, parameters or guidelines 
    • conclusions or recommendations, and 
    • communication of technical scientific information to a non-expert audience
  • Between the professional work products, applicants must demonstrate that they meet 1 key indicator from each of the following professional practice competencies:
    • Scientific knowledge and concepts
    • Laws, regulations and policy
    • Standards and practices
    • Communication

Professional Practice Competencies

  • Meet one key indicator for each of the seven Professional Practice Competencies.

Scientific Concepts and Knowledge

This competency involves being aware of and having experience with scientific concepts, knowledge, and implementation. 

Key Indicators:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of scientific information and concepts.
  • Incorporate relevant scientific knowledge and concepts in their practice.
  • Use knowledge and scientific understanding to improve the application of existing and emerging scientific concepts, knowledge or technology in their practice.

Laws, Regulations & Policies 

This competency is the capability to interpret and understand the intent of legally binding requirements and policy. 

Key Indicators:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of a) regulatory and policy requirements as a regulated professional; b) demonstrate knowledge relevant to Scope of Practice.
  • Incorporate regulatory and policy requirements in their practice.
  • Implement regulatory and policy requirements in their practice.

Standards and Practices

This competency involves understanding the standards and practices and having the ability required to perform or practice applied biology. 

Key Indicators:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of standards and practices relevant to their area of practice.
  • Incorporate standards and practices in their practice.
  • Implement standards and practices in their practice.

Project or Work Product Management

This competency involves experience in the discipline of planning, organizing or managing resources to bring about the successful completion of a specific project or work product. 

Key Indicators:

  • Demonstrate skills in the scoping, planning and implementing of projects/assignments.
  • Demonstrate skills in evaluation of and in drawing conclusions from scientific and other data.
  • Provide advice, options/solutions, requirements.

Records/Data Management and Informatics

This competency involves demonstrated ability to conduct the systematic control of creating, distributing, using, maintaining integrity, confidentiality, security and disposing of recorded information maintained as evidence of business activities and transactions. 

Key Indicators:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of records management and information.
  • Implement policies and protocols relating to records management and informatics in their practice.
  • Respect for confidentiality in their practice.

Professional Accountability

This competency involves performing the duties of one’s profession generally, or performing a particular professional task in a professional manner. 

Key Indicators:

  • Demonstrate an awareness of scope of practice and limitations.
  • Exercise skills in applied biology and other professional skills as required for work undertaken.
  • Take responsibility for their work and work of others’ (if applicable).

Communication

This competency involves respectfully and effectively conveying information and expressing thoughts and facts and displaying openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts. 

Key Indicators:

  • Communicate written and oral information in a clear, concise and comprehensible manner.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with specialist and non-specialist audiences, colleagues, clients and others.
  • Communicate and acknowledge the value of alternative views and hypotheses.

References

  • Provide 3 references that are familiar with the applicant’s work and can speak to how they demonstrate the professional practice competencies.
  • References must:
    • be knowledgeable about your professional experience as a biologist,
    • be able to speak to your professional practice competencies, and
    • not be related to you unless the relative is a supervising professional.
