SUMMARY:What’s the Future of Grasslands and Rangelands in the East Kootenay?
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this gathering is to tell stories\, share knowledge\, and explore ideas and solutions for improving grassland and rangeland health in the East Kootenay. This event will explore the related implications of changing grasslands in the East Kootenay for wildlife and livestock forage\, vulnerable grassland-dependent species\, Indigenous and regional food security\, wildfire risk reduction\, and invasive species. To this end\, a multidisciplinary group of scientists\, First Nations\, natural resource professionals\, land managers\, and ranchers will gather to discuss current land management challenges\, initiatives\, knowledge gaps\, and the cumulative impacts to ecosystem health. The underlying assumption guiding this event is that if you improve grassland health through restoration\, protection\, and stewardship\, then you improve conditions for wildlife\, grassland ecosystems\, and communities whose cultures and livelihoods are tied to these spaces.

SUMMARY:Environmental DNA (eDNA) Theory and Implementation
DESCRIPTION:Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a proven and globally accepted method that is increasingly being used for survey of aquatic taxa. This highly effective\, cost-efficient\, and non-invasive method relies on the detection of genetic materials in aquatic ecosystems using laboratory analysis of water samples to detect DNA from the target taxa. Environmental DNA methods are predicated on basic biological principles and employ long-standing proven methods for laboratory testing. This is a two-day course presented by Columbia Mountains Institute of Applied Ecology.

SUMMARY:Wetland Classification: An introduction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Columbia Mountains Institute of Applied Ecology\, this course will introduce students to the BC Classification system of wetlands and the Canadian Wetland Classification System\, providing them with an overview of how to classify and delineate wetlands and the differences between using these systems. The course will start with a classroom session learning how to classify wetlands using the physical and biological characteristics (e.g.\, hydric soils\, hydric plant indicators\, and hydrology). These field parameters will be applied to protocols including the Canadian National Wetland Inventory that can be used in the field to describe\, classify\, and delineate wetlands. The course will include 3-4 field site visits around the Revelstoke area to local wetlands to practice classification and delineation processes using site forms and the Wetlands of British Columbia (LMH 52) guidebook. Functional wetland assessments (including the Wetland Ecosystem Services Protocol) and condition assessments will also be briefly discussed.

SUMMARY:Field Soil Description & Classification Course
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Columbian Mountains Institute of Applied Ecology\, this course will cover procedures for observing\, measuring\, and describing soils in the field. The goal is to produce consistent data for soil inventory\, mapping and classification using techniques that improve the consistency of determining soil properties in the field. Students will gain experience with describing and classifying forest and wetland soils in the Revelstoke area using soil horizons and properties measured in the field. Students will discuss how soil data collected in the field can inform soil management practices relating to conservation\, agriculture\, forestry\, mining\, and oil & gas activities.

SUMMARY:Understanding Statistics and Decision-Making for Natural Resource Managers
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Columbia Mountains Institute of Applied Ecology\, this online eight-day online course with Joe Thorley is for natural resource managers who have to interpret the results of statistical analyses and make decisions about how much data to collect and which management actions to undertake. The course focuses on the fundamentals of uncertainty\, modeling\, effect sizes\, decision theory and the value of information. It does not require a statistical background and doesn’t involve any modeling although different types of results are presented and discussed.

SUMMARY:Data Manipulation and Visualization in R
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Columbia Mountains Institute of Applied Ecology\, the course on data manipulation and visualization will provide students with the tools they need to effectively tidy\, transform and visualize their data in R. This course will teach the theory behind tidy data\, setting up a reproducible data pipeline\, introduction in the tidyverse suite of packages\, importing data\, tidying data\, transforming data\, dealing with missing data\, summary statistics\, exploratory data analysis\, data visualizations and writing reports in R markdown. Focus on dplyr\, tidyr and ggplot2 packages from the tidyverse. \nThis course spans four half-days. Students should have a basic working knowledge of R software to take this course. This course is paired with a Ayla’s Intro to R course (next scheduled for May 6-9 and Oct 15-18).
