SUMMARY:RX-310 Introduction to Fire Effects
DESCRIPTION:RX-310: Introduction to Fire Effects is a practical online course for applied biologists\, ecologists\, land managers\, and fire practitioners who want to better understand how fire affects vegetation\, soils\, wildlife habitat\, watersheds\, cultural values\, and post-fire recovery. The course helps participants learn the language and application of fire effects so they can better connect with prescribed fire practitioners\, fire ecologists\, burn planners\, and others working in this space.

SUMMARY:Essential Fisheries Field Skills
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\nThe Essential Fisheries Field Skills Certificate Program (EFFS) is a highly applied\, two-week training program that provides participants with in-demand skills and knowledge in salmonid biology/fish identification\, fisheries field techniques\, fish and fish habitat inventory and assessment (qualitative and quantitative)\, electrofishing certification\, and water quality sampling and monitoring techniques. This program is suitable for new or existing environmental practitioners wishing to update and expand their skills and abilities. Participants that commonly enroll include environmental consultants\, existing field technicians\, resource workers\, First Nations\, individuals new to the industry\, and graduates of other post-secondary fisheries or environmental programs. \nObjectives\nThe EFFS is designed to address the need for certified\, skilled fisheries field technicians. This program provides relevant\, in-demand training to individuals seeking to acquire or upgrade fisheries field skills. Graduates of this program may then become certified technicians\, well-suited for employment conducting fish habitat inventory and assessment. \nFormat\nClass: 3.5 days; Field: 6.5 days \nThis course is comprised of six modules delivered over a two-week period\, Monday to Friday. Classroom sessions typically run from 9am to 4:30pm and field sessions typically run from 9am to 5pm or 6pm. Longer field sessions are common when extensive travel to field sites is involved.

SUMMARY:GeoEnviroPro Talks: Beyond Guidelines: Using Multiple Lines of Evidence to Screen Organic Contaminants in Salmon Habitat
DESCRIPTION:GeoEnviroPro Talks are free weekly\, 30-minute webinars designed to keep you current on emerging topics in environmental science and practice. Join live sessions at no cost. Replays are available for a limited time after each webinar. \nAbout the Webinar: Juvenile Chinook salmon in the Lower Fraser River encounter a complex mixture of organic contaminants from urban\, agricultural\, and industrial sources. This presentation introduces a multiple‑lines‑of‑evidence screening approach designed to broaden contaminant assessment beyond traditional environmental quality guidelines. Using the Lower Fraser River as a case study\, the talk examines how integrating in vivo toxicity and in vitro bioactivity databases can expand the capacity to screen contaminants that may pose risks to the health of salmon and other aquatic life. It also highlights practical considerations for applying this screening approach. \nAbout the Instructor: Bonnie Lo\, MET\, PhD\, RPBio\nDr. Lo is an environmental toxicologist and independent consultant with over 15 years of experience in aquatic toxicology. Her work spans toxicity testing\, method development\, and site‑specific evaluations for industry\, consulting\, and government clients. Her PhD research included metabolomics‑based assessments of juvenile salmon health\, acute toxicity testing of the rubber tire-derived contaminant 6PPD‑quinone\, and large‑scale contaminant screening in the Lower Fraser River to inform monitoring and salmon recovery efforts.

SUMMARY:GeoEnviroPro Talks: Where to Draw the Line: How Toxicity Tests Are Used to Derive Generic and Site-Specific Numerical Limits for Contaminants
DESCRIPTION:GeoEnviroPro Talks are free weekly\, 30-minute webinars designed to keep you current on emerging topics in environmental science and practice. Join live sessions at no cost. Replays are available for a limited time after each webinar. \nAbout the webinar: If Paracelsus described the basis of toxicology as the “dose makes the poison”\, then modern environmental toxicology has extended this concept further to read: “The dose makes the poison\, and the medium makes the dose”. In other words\, one concentration never defines the toxicity of a potential pollutant\, but rather a pollutants’ threshold for toxicity could occur over a range of concentrations\, depending on how it is modified by what else is in the water\, sediment or soil.\nGeneric environmental quality guidelines are typically derived from toxicity tests which may have important differences to the site they are being applied to. In this presentation we will explore how guidelines are derived and how to develop appropriate site-specific limits. \nAbout the instructor: Joshua Baker\, M.Sc.\, P.Chem.\nJosh Baker is an a environmental chemist (BSc\, MSc) who works at the interface of biology and chemistry. Josh has spent over 15 years conducting toxicity tests to assist environmental assessments. He runs Rise Over Run Environmental and is currently supporting the development of environmental toxicology services at BQE Water. He lives on the land of the Whonnock people (in Maple Ridge) where he and his small farm and family grow.

SUMMARY:Reporting Best Practices for Riparian Assessments in BC
DESCRIPTION:Significant changes to British Columbia’s Riparian Areas Protection Regulation (RAPR) take effect on January 1\, 2027. For environmental professionals and municipal reviewers\, navigating this updated framework requires more than just reading the new guidelines\, it requires translating them into rigorous\, defensible field work and reporting. \nThis intensive\, 3-day masterclass bridges the gap between regulatory theory and front-line consulting execution. You will leave with an end-to-end roadmap for scoping\, conducting\, and reporting under the new RAPR technical guidance\, eliminating the guesswork and frustrating potential review delays.
